Historically, AR-15 was the name for the rifle made by the now defunct Armalite before it was adopted by the US military as the M16 rifle in the early 1960s. In the modern usage, AR-15 is a catchall term for semi-automatic rifles based on the M16 or M4 carbine popular with police SWAT, legitimate gun owners, Gravy SEALs and mass shooters.
