Republicans have no fresh policy ideas apart from wanting to gut government functionality to facilitate privatizing, deregulating industry and banking which screws over consumers and the environment and tax cuts for the rich and corporations.

So rather than come up with new ideas that may resonate with more voters, they want to choose who can vote for them.
