When does a government that took power after a hostile ruler is overthrown by an external invasion stop being classed as a puppet regime? Germany and Japan were defeated and occupied by foreign countries in World War 2 but their governments are not considered puppets by any stretch.

The recently fallen Afghan government was weak and corrupt and took power through flawed elections. Do that many people believe only the Taliban should be recognized as the 'real' or authentic rulers of Afghanistan because they're openly hostile to Western countries and took power by force?
